Otto Eduard Pippel was born on February 10, 1878 in (then) Polish-Russian Lodz as the son of German immigrants from Westphalia. After his studies at the arts school in Strasbourg he continued his artistic education at the art academies in Karlsruhe and Dresden (1907-1908). In Dresden he became a student of Gotthard Kuehl’s who was influenced by the impressionists. Completing his studies Pippel traveled to Paris where he had his breakthrough as an impressionist painter. Meanwhile he had joined the “Luitpold Group”. Pippel turned out to be a true expert of color. Professor Heinrich Zügel called him an “artist of color” being able to capture the atmosphere of nature and interiors in colors like very few others. Pippel painted the city of Munich numerous times: busy streets and places, the “Oktoberfest” and beer gardens suffused with light.
