Painted in a specific scraper technique – as it was typical of Oskar Miller – this work presents itself with high contrasts and an extraordinary sharpness. In the background a dark and distinctive mountain range rises. The buildings of a traditional house located on a peak clearly stand out in the foreground. Their architectural shapes correspond with the edgy surface formation of the rock wall. Vividly coloured details, red geraniums and clothes drying on the balcony’s balustrade contribute to the vitality of the painting.

After studying at the municipal vocational school in Munich and at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Alois Delug and Rudolf Jettmar, landscape and still life painter Oskar Mulley became particularly known for his mountain subjects. From 1918 until 1934 he lived and worked in Kufstein, Austria. He then moved to Garmisch, Germany. In 1937 he was awarded the Austrian Golden Medal.
