Joseph Wopfner came to Munich in 1860 where he worked as a painter and later as a lithograph. From 1860 onwards, he studied at the Munich Academy under Piloty and from 1869 to1872 under Eduard Schleich the Elder. Wopfner was friends with Wilhelm Leibl and a regular hunting guest of Prince Regent Luipold’s. For his paintings of Lake Chiemsee he was inspired by Eduard Schleich the Elder whose landscapes stood out through their light effects. Since 1888 Wopfner had a professor title. In 1890, he was awarded the second gold medal for one of his works at Glass Palace Munich. In 1896, Wopfner became an honorary member of the Munich Academy. Initiated by the Munich Artist Association (Künstlergenossenschaft), a comprehensive exhibition of his estate was presented in 1929.
