Georges Jeannin

1841 – 1925 Paris

“Still life with apples”
Oil on canvas, 61 x 73 cm, signed

Being a student of Victor Vincelet’s in Paris, Jeannin solely dedicated himself to still lives: fruits and flowers. In 1868, he presented one of his paintings for the first time at the Paris Salon where he exhibited on a regular basis. He received several medals and awards and became chairman of the Société des Peintres de Fleurs. His early works were influenced by traditional Dutch paintings. Thoroughly arranged, the flowers or fruits were often set against a dark background. The more Jeannin was taken by an impressionist style and paid attention to the vivid light reflections, the more he turned towards bouquets or fruit baskets that had been quickly put away and needed to be arranged after coming straight from the garden.
