Edward Theodore Compton is one of the most well-known painters and illustrators of the Alpine mountains world-wide. No other painter depicted the Alps as comprehensively and as unique as E.T. Compton.

Unlike many of his fellow artists Mr. Compton attached great importance to a lifelike depiction of the views he chose. Compton himself was considered as an excellent mountaineer who achieved numerous first ascents.

From 1885 to 1912, he was the leading illustrator of the German-Austrian Alpine Association. His artworks were crucial fort the upcoming of the alpine tourism.
