The painting reveals at first glance how masterfully Clara Lotte von Marcard-Cucuel depicted floral still lifes. Her brush stroke, choice of colours and composition demonstrate her great artistic skills and technical brilliance. The beholder’s attention is immediately drawn to the bouquet in the middle ground. Surrounded by beautiful flower heads in various lavender shapes and a light green, a red blossom visually sticks out. A few flowers are arranged in front of the grey-white vase. Reflecting the colours of the bouquet, they playfully enclose a glass and a brown-coloured pot with green leaves. On the left side, the composition is completed by a dark and rather abstract fabric, which dynamically contrasts with the light background.

Von Marcard-Cucuel, who married the impressionist painter Edward Cucuel in 1913, lived with her husband at Lake Ammer, in Starnberg, Germany, and in New York. With the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the couple left Europe permanently.
