Alexander Koester studied under Carl Hoff and Claus Meyer at the Karlsruhe Academy. Thereafter, he temporarily lived in Munich where he was inspired by the circle around Piloty and Diez. He had his permanent residence in Klausen, Tyrol, where most of his oeuvre was created. Eventually, he worked in Dießen, Ammersee.

Koester began with genre paintings of Tyrolean people and atmospheric landscapes. Later on, he specialized in the depiction of harvesting in various situations. Hereby, he preferred an expanded brush stroke, as it was typical of late Impressionism. About 200 of his works could be found in the collection of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich.
