After studies at the Art Academies in Dresden and Munich Albert Zimmermann founded a school for landscape painting in 1833. From 1857 until 1859 he was professor at the Academy in Milan, 1860/71 in Vienna. In 1885, he returned to Munich.

Albert Zimmermann painted heroic landscapes with staffage figures inspired by Joseph Anton Koch or Karl Rottmann as well as naturalistic landscapes after Calames.

The displayed painting shows the Bay of Menton at the French Riviera. The hilly and heavily vegetated headland and the Alps form the setting; its multi-layered arrangement creates a visual depth. A sensitive observation of nature and a well-balanced composition add up to a harmonious Mediterranean coastal scenery.
