Ricardo Arredondo y Calmache’s painting shows Cigarrales, cottages on the shores of Tagus in Toledo, standing out through its depiction of details. On the sunny riverbank some plants burst through the old brickwork of the buildings. The window screens throw gentle shadows, whereas a torn caparison lies in still air under the balcony. The reflections on the water surface demonstrate the artist’s keen power of observation.

Spanish painter Ricardo Arredondo y Calmache had his first private exhibition in Madrid in 1882. City views of old Toledo and its surrounding areas were his major topic right from the beginning. He received various awards and achieved success internationally. His painting “The Mills” was presented at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris.
