Anna Gasteiger’s interest in art already began in her childhood. Having depicted scenes of interiors following Dutch paintings from the 17th century at an early stage, she improved her skills at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich from 1894 and later at the school of painting and sculpture, founded by Julius Exter and Mathias Gasteiger, at Deutenhofen Castle near Dachau. As early as 1899, she showed works at the German Art Exhibition (Deutsche Kunstausstellung) in Dresden. Further shows followed, such as participations at the spring exhibition of the Munich Secession in 1910 and at Lenbachhaus, Munich, in 1922. Anna Gasteiger’s paintings stand out through their brightness and intensity revealing a light brushwork and a sense of easiness. Often, the artist presented her flower still lifes on a glossy table top in the backlight. Mostly, she painted in oil on grey board, a material that allowed a pastose colour application. As a member of the Kunstverein (Art Association) Munich and with distinguished party events, she and her husband Mathias Gasteiger greatly contributed to a dynamic exchange between artists in and around Munich.
